Unhappy Dual Climate Control Heat Problem

Hi All,

I'm a new member here and I've been dealing with this problem for the past few months. I have a 2009 Honda Accord EX-L with 42K miles. When I start my car in the morning, if I try to adjust the temperature on the driver's side, my car goes into "Lo" but I can still adjust the passenger side when in dual mode. It only happens when it's freezing out and I'm usually able to adjust the driver's side after 20 minutes of heating up/ driving. I've had a coolant flush which didn't resolve the problem. Once the car is in "Lo" mode, I cannot change the temperature even if I shut off A/C, turn Auto on or off. I've tried the self-diagnosis but it remains blank.

Anyone have a similar problem or know what might be the cause.

It appears electric to me, since I have heat if I don't touch the temperature control gauge.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

I already read some of your posts at another forum. So, you did the following already, correct?
  • Low on anti-freeze/coolant. Filled and okay for about 2 weeks, then same problem.
  • Coolant flushed
  • Self diagnostic shows no codes
In the service manual, it states if the driver's and passenger's side vent temperatures varies by more than 20 degrees F, the probable cause are the recirculation control door or the air mix door is malfunctioning. Troubleshooting would be a tests of the following:
  • recirculation control motor
  • driver's air mix control motor
  • passenger air mix control motor (this sounds to be working properly)

Hi, thank you for your response. The recirculation vent does make an awful sound when pressed when the driver side is stuck at the "Lo" temperature. I will troubleshoot those later today and let you know what I find. Thanks.

You'll need someone with access to the service manual to perform the tests.

The driver's air mix control motor is under the center left side of the dash and the recirculation control motor is located behind the passenger glove box. If one of them is the problem, they are not difficult to replace; only a few screws hold them on.

Sorry to hear you have the same issue! What year is your car? I haven't been able to look into the problem as I've been traveling the past few weekends and with sunset at 5:30pm doesn't allow for much weekday time. Let me know if you find solutions in the meantime.
