Default engine and trans problem??? help!!!

I need help. I have a 92 accord lx with a f20a and a five speed trans. Today I was haulingrear and red lined 2nd gear and started hearing a type of nocking noise comming from the front of my car. I pulled over and the noise wasnt so lound but you could hear it. and when I would rev it up it would sound loud as sh__t, the nocking noise.I thought it was my exhaust.so on my way to my mechanic the noise was only noticable while accelarating and while slowing down and of course in between shifts but not while in smooth idle. and at a stop light if I press the clutch in it wouldnt sound as loud. my mechanic said it was the main engine bearing but I think its the tranny.. what do you guys think anybody..help!!!!!

I'd be more willing to think it's a bearing than a tranny issue... It would make sense that it would quiet down when you press the clutch since that takes some of the strain off it

Do you know of any way to check if it is that?

start the car. is it noisy?

depress the clutch pedal halfway - is it louder or softer?

depress the clutch pedal to the floor while in neutral at a stop - is the noise loudest or gone?

When you push the clutch pedal down, you disengage the trans from the engine completely, if you just pop it into N, then the input shaft is still spinning with the clutch engaged. This should help find the noise. In N there is minimal drag on the crank bearings. The crank is always turning the heavy flywheel, an input shaft and a few gears should not make it much worse.

Thanks for your feedback it turned out to be the main crank bearing

the crank main bearing's'?

there are _5_ crank main bearings. it's VERY odd for the crank bearings to go out if the engine has been maintained.

does the noise go away if:
ORIGINAL: HondatechAV6

start the car. is it noisy?

depress the clutch pedal halfway - is it louder or softer?

depress the clutch pedal to the floor while in neutral at a stop - is the noise loudest or gone?

I was going to make a guess at something in the head. Saul, how did you determine that you spun a main bearing?
