Default eractic idle in neutral/park

I can start the engine normally. As soon as it warms up the idle starts speeding up and lowers. a constant up-down. Then eventually the motor will overheat. New thermostat, and oil in both the trans and motor. Its fuel programed and this started on a trip up the moutains. Soit went from ocean level to 7000 ft elevation. Thefirst stop on the hill, the motor was not idling correctly. On the way home, twice it overheated with no warning. I watched the idiot gauge and after about 200 miles the needle jumped over the to the overheated. Sat and cooled it off, put fluids in it and the lower we got in elevation, the less it over heated. ANY HELP!!!!!!

In the signature area where you currently have your name if you add your year/model/tranny/trim we could help you a lot faster. Without knowing what you're driving it's hard to give you an inteligent response.

You could very well still have air pockets in your cooling system, this will also cause your erratic idle, it is supposed to idle this way if certain conditions are met, yes, they are bad conditions, it is called fuel cut strategy, a half a dozen causes will make it idle this way. I would also adjust the idle screw a little in the throttle body.

This doesn't help the problem, but could save you some time if the road is not that curvey.

If your engine is heating up and you need to "emergency cool" it down, leave the tranny in gear and cut the ignition. This will pump cool air through the engine without spark or fuel. You will need to put the tranny in neutral to restart the car and if you do it quickly, you will not have to crank the starter. If there are other cars around, make sure that your warning lights are on. If conditions do not allow you to drive safely while doing this, cool the car off the old fashioned way.

I have heard of the erratic idle, but not the over heating. A lot of older Accords 86-93 have similar idle air control solenoids. Mine started acting up about 1 month ago and about 7 months before that, but then it stopped. My brother's Accord did the same. You might want to take it off and clean it up before you go and spend any money.

Thanks! I'll try it. Other than the idling problem, it runs great. Just dont want to create any problems!

You said that you had to put coolant into the system. Was the car low on antifreeze? If you fluid gets low, there is a posibility of air getting into the system (like 2Pointauto said). Keep a close eye on you coolant level. If it drops, then you have a leak, and you need to fix that first.

Another way to help cool the engine down is to turn up the heat full blast to take away heat from the engine. I had to this while driving through a traffic jam on the DanRyan Expressway through Chicago in 95 degree heat. I must have lost 10 pounds during that drive, it was miserable, but it did help cool down the engine.
