Help Please - 2005 EX 4Cyl Starting is taking longer to start
 

Gentlemen, a little help.

I have a 2005 Accord 4 cylinder EX. Over the last 3-4 months it has taken to taking longer to crank then before. It almost sounds like a weak battery, before it was num num num vroom, now it is num..num..num..vroom. Same number of turn overs just slower.

I have replaced the battery and upgraded to the 35 series unit from a V6.

I have tried turning the key and waiting for a few seconds to let the fuel system charge.

It seems that the first start after a long pause is the worst, overnight etc.

It seems to improve after that but i can not find any voltage drains?

What do you guys think? Searches seem to indicate the starter might be weak? Or perhaps the fuel pump? I am not effected by the recall (by VIN apparently i have the denso).

Also it never fails to start or engage this all about the speed that the starter is turning.

Finally if it is the starter it appears i need to remove the intake manifold and just unbolt it? Other then the FelPro Gasket Set Part Number: MS96473 and the starter is there anything else i should be aware of?

Auto, sorry should have mentioned that.

yeah, you need a starter. should be the Mitsuba type for automatic trans. check rock auto out, lots of options...i'd put a link in, but evidently it's against the law ;) as far as the intake gasket, if you are careful you could reuse the original one. it should be metal.

First I would rule out loose/dirty/corroded battery cable connections - both ends of cables.

Then check the cables themselves. I've seen corrosion where the cable itself is crimped into the end-lug.

The fuel pump will not make the starter crank slower. That's all about getting enough electrical power to the starter, and/or the starter motor getting weak.

Well it was the starter. And I did have to replace the intake manifold gasket. So thanks guys.

I assume that the resistance in the electric motor in the starter was just making it harder and harder to spin the car up.

I used a Autozone Duralast Gold Refurbished lifetime warranty and it was around $130 with 10 dollar core charge.

It took about an hour / hour and a half.

It is night and day different between the two.

Also my car has 250K on it and I just replaced the original starter.

it's usually the brushes that wear out and don't make good enough contact.
