Help with trunk spring install
Hello, everyone.
I am a new member and glad to see more technical posts than other group sites. It is much more interesting this way.
I need some help with a 1997 Accord sedan that was once repainted. The shop did outstanding work on the paint, but did a really tacky job putting it back together.
Recently, the trunk spring center (plastic) support broke. I got a replacement support bracket, but it will not hold both springs; they just pop out from too much tension. I don't recall exactly how they are supposed to be attached.
I was browsing the internet today and noticed an image of the trunk springs in a 1998 Accord. It showed only one spring held by the lower slot in the center support. So I come to ask if anyone with a 1996 or 1997 Accord sedan would show me a snapshot of how the springs are installed in the center support?
I would really appreciate the help. I don't trust the body shop enough to go back to them. They may mess it up even more.
Thanks.

Go to Majestic Honda and look up your car for parts. Check Trunk Lid.
Looks like there's a clip that holds the two springs together. Do you have that part? Probably your problem.
good luck

Too much tension or not enough? How about swapping the springs end-for-end? Are the 2 ends different from each other?
I think that center thing is just to prevent noise from the 2 springs rattling against each other.

Thanks for the reply.
I followed your recommendation by checking the website. I went back and re-examined the springs on the car. It looks like they are both supposed to be mounted in the center, but have been bent out of shape.
Makes me wonder what the heck the body shop did to them? I hate to think of whatever else the fiddled with.

@ JimBlake:
I didn't seriously consider that. It's worth a try before I buy another pair.
The springs were always a little weak, but now they rub against each other and the rear deck; they squeak like crazy. So annoying!
