IT is not the axles ,,( cv joints are part of the complete axle) and besides before you go out and buy new parts you ALWAYS need to properly diagnose the issue
specially ( no offense to your friends ) when someone tells you it is something and they got no clue ,,,, it is easy to guess with someone else's money isn't it ??
are tires ok ,separated ply? like advised ,,,, chk the frt suspension parts..inner and outer tie rods, upper and lower control arms, etc ,etc

About that business of the steering wheel spinning...
Better yet, while you do this, have someone reach in through the window & hold the steering wheel. If not, the small motion of the steering wheel against the lock will feel a lot like a loose tie-rod-end ball joint.

Loose radius rods don't allow the wheel to "steer". They will allow the whole wheel to move fore & aft but it'll take a lot of force. Best to check the radius rods by looking at the forward end where they're bolted to the frame. Look for rotted rubber bushings & stuff like that. Or loose nuts (#30 in the picture above).
