I was just wondering if it would hurt to run 87 in my car? It calls for 92 or higher but we all know it not getting cheaper ay time soon.

 

You should be fine, just go ahead and run it, if the motor sounds like it's "ticking" or pre-detonating or basically just sounds different then you should probably switch back to the 92 but I've run 87 octane fuel in a few different cars that call for 92....

 

I currently am running 87 octane in mycar and I get no pinging or problems either and I have over 210,000 miles on her...

use what is recommended in the car. While you can use lower octane, it is not reommended since it will adversely affect performance and fuel economy and may cause your car to ping.....especially at higher rpms

 

why would you want to replace anything that (minute chance) that could go wrong with not running what the car calls for. I don't think I would ever tell my wife to run 87 on our '06 325i!! That sounds way too expensive in my book!

 

iirc, most (if not all) new cars that require premium will run fine on regular (87) because they automatically retard the timing to keep detonation to a minimum, albeit at the cost of fuel economy & performance.if you're typically a "spirited" driver, you should ante up for the premium.
