Default Knock sensor necessary?

While working on my 2001 accord 2.3L F23a1, I managed to break the knock(detonation) sensor. It is mounted above and to the drivers side of the oil filter. After pricing a replacement I was wondering if this sensor is absolutely necessary or can it be omitted or bypassed?

Car ECU manages timing under detonation (pinging) conditions to prevent this problem which can damage an engine under severe conditions. If OEM is too expensive check ebay for a used or new unit. I checked and plenty available for <$75. A local junk yard may be even cheaper, but lots of calling required to locate a part.

Careful installation to proper torque to avoid damage.

good luck
