LONG CRANK TIME IN COLD WEATHER
 

93 ACCORD EX A/T...
HAVING A COLD WEATHER STARTING PROBLEM (30-45 DEGREES).
WHEN THE WEATHER TURNED A LITTLE COLDER IT TAKES 7-10 SECONDS OR MORE FOR THE ENGINE TO ATTEMPT TO START, WITH JUST A SPUTTER. THEN MORE CRANKING WILL GET THE ENGINE TO START AND SLOWLY GET TO A FAST IDLE. WHEN IT IS WARM OUT THERE ARE NO STARTING PROBLEMS AT ALL. ALSO DRIVES FINE.

1. TRIED NEW BATTERY NO HELP, WAS SWAPPED FROM ANOTHER CAR.

2. FOUND BOTH WIRES AT T/W (ECT) SENSOR BARE. FIXED WIRE AND REPLACED T/W SENSOR- NO HELP

3. FOUND OIL IN PLUG WIRES AND #4 PLUG WIRE NOT HAVING A GOOD CONNECTION.
REPLACED WIRES AND PLUGS & CLEANED OUT OIL FROM BAD LOWER SEALS.
WILL FIX LATER.

4. CHANGED OUT FUEL FILTER ON FIRE WALL. HAD A LITTLE DIRT IN FILTER NOT BAD.
NO HELP.

5.NEED HELP PLEASE. WHAT CAN I TEST NEXT. THANK YOU

can you check fuel pressure? this will tell you if the pressure is too low or if it's leaking down from leaking injectors or a bad fuel pump check valve.

did you inspect the fuel pressure regulator? remove the fpr vacuum line while the engine is running. does any fuel spill out? can you coax any fuel out by feathering the vacuum line on the port a few times?

if you suspect the problem will happen on a partiucular start up, try holding the pedal to the floor while cranking. any improvement?

What i have done already has not helped. Also there is no fault codes or check engine light.

I will be able to try what you suggested in the am, Once you get it started the problem goes away.

I have the same problem with mine, but if i turn the key to the "on" position until I hear the fuel pump stop it will fire up no problems. Mine is from a leaking injector, but try turning the key on and letting the fuel system pressurize before crankingand see if that helps.

This might or might not have any bearing on your problem, but how old are the spark plugs?

It may be the fast idle valve is not opening when cold. This may cause and over-rich mixture and slow start. You check by removing the cover and using finger to check for air flow when engine is cold. It's operated by a wax pellet and these fail regularly in coolant thermostats.

Can i do any thing to check this with engine not running. Because after i get it started it starts every time. Ken
