Default Need Prof Transmission help - 96 accord

A little history, I have a 96 accord, 4cyl, auto trans. I replaced the trans about a year and a half ago with a salvage trans. Car ran fine up until recently. When the car is cold, the trans seemed to work ok for a few minutes. Once it warmed up, it would quit pulling and just rev up. I figured the trans was shot. I still had the old core, so I bought a kit and put in it. I was very cautious about keeping everything clean through out the process, After installing the trans, I drove it up the road and it seemed to run fine. Drove it about two miles. Came back home and then it started doing the same thing kinda. When first starting the car cold, it appears to pull fine, but once it warms up, it stops pulling. I can turn the car off, let it sit for a minute or two, start it back up and it will pull for a few minutes, but then quits. The d4 light does not blink and there are no codes or CEL. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to start looking for? I have checked the shift solenoids and they click when power is applied. I am going to check the fluid pressures tomorrow to see if the pressure drops off when it stops pulling. Other than these things, what else do I need to check? Thanks in advance for all replies and help.

I would still check for codes. You can short a service connector under the glove box to get codes the OBD1 way and count the CEL and/or the D4 light flashes. There is a writeup in the DIY section on how to get CEL codes.

If you have an OBD2 code reader, then the connector is behind the ash tray to read the OBD2 way.

You may try adjusting the throttle cable that goes to the transmission. TexasHonda just posted about doing this. https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ad.php?t=37070

the only thing i could think would be that the pump inside the transmission is wore and when it heats up there isnt enough pressure being provided by the pump to engage the clutches

Check for codes.. if nothing then check pressures as you mentioned.

They are going to tell you the story of what happening (Or not happening) inside.

My 1990 Accord is doing the same thing. Goes into gear when cold won't go into gear when it warms up. Solenoids click and sound like they are working. Did the pressure check tell you anything?

Well, here I am again. I realize I posted this topic about six months ago. This car was my daughters and when this problem started and I could not fix it, she just bought another vehicle. The accord has been sitting ever since. She recently needed some money and asked if I was interested in buying the honda. I really didn't want it, but she is my baby girl, so I bought the car in hopes of fixing it up and selling to try and recoup some of my money. The car would make a good work car if I can fix it. I have replaced the front axles and cv joints, new timing belts, new muffler and tail pipe, new front struts, new plugs and wires, tune-up, new brakes, new battery, radiator less than two years old, probably some things I have forgot, but you get the idea. I'm in it pretty good, all work was done by me so just parts. Any way, the car is still having the same issue. Transmission will not pull after it warms up. I can drive it around the yard for 10 or 15 minutes and then it starts to slip. After it sits for a little while same thing. I checked the pressure on a pressure port next to the solenoids, not sure what this pressure is and it has been a while since I checked it. I want to think it was reading around 120 psi while the trans is pulling. When it quits pulling, the pressure will drop to zero. I will have to check this further as it has been a while since I did it. One thing it has done on two occasions, starting the engine cold, it appears there is a load on the engine when in park. Have to keep the accel open a little to keep it from stalling. After a minute, the trans dip stick was blown out of the trans from pressure build up. Don't understand that and like I said has only happened twice. Just looking for someone that might have had a similar experience of some guidence from the smat people on here. Don't really want to spend the money for another tranny if I can keep from it. Thanks in advance.

When you built/replace the trans, was the converter replaced?

I am in the process of swapping the Auto (blown) to a 5 speed.
I think it is going to be the most permanent solution.
For you tossing in a junkyard trans and selling would be your best bet unless you are truly interested in using the Honda as your work car.
If that is the case buying a junk Honda with a blown motor and good 5 speed could be a long term solution.
i think I will have a total of $200 or less in my swap once I am done.

I have a 01 Honda Accord that's flashing a green light on D4 indicator on the
dash, the shift is locked in park, the rear tail light ain't coming on and the check engine light stays on.

Put a computer test on it and a (Transmission Lockup Soleniod A) came up.
Was wondering which one of the soleniod on the transmission is the
Lockup Soleniod A?

Can anyone help me located that soleniod please.

Thanks

Leslie

the lock up soleniods are the top ones closest to the starter.

It will not come out of park because your brake lights are not working.

check your fuses if they are fine then check your brake light switch on the brake pedal lever.
