New Accord, need to add oil! Which?
So my brand new accord has 2000 miles on it. I've read the manual and on here, not to change the oil until at LEAST 5000 miles because the factory fill contains some "special additives".
I've also read on here to continually check the oil because as a new car it will burn some oil until it "breaks in".
Okay, so I have to add some oil....but which one!
I realize I need to add 5w20, but which brand/syn/non-syn since I don't want to dilute the "factory fill".

the dealership will gouge you...i am pretty sure that the accords do call for a 5w20...whether or not you run synthetic is up to you, but the dealership will charge you a TON for the oil.

The factory fill is non synthetic made for Honda by Exxon. Use any NON- synthetic 5W20 to top it off. After 5000 miles you can switch to synthetic, I suggest Mobil 1 0W20 (being phased out) or their new 5W20.
EDIT At the time I wrote this M1 0W20 WAS being phased out, it was the API SL designation. Now that the newest, or SM is the standard they have returned with 0W20 again......along with 5W20. Why both? Got me by the short hairs, I don't know.

I don't know if I would use an oil that's being phased out. Not a good idea to change the type of oil you use too often. Just pick one and stick with it. Also, according to my owners manual and the saleman, my first oil change is at 10,000 miles, not 5,000 as you've indicated.

Personally I would not stretch dino oil out to 10K no matter what Honda says, it just won't hold up. They also say to change the oil filter every other oil change!! Folks this just isn't good for engine longevity, it's to show lower costs of operation.
For what it's worth the 0W20 M1 is an excellent product but the 5W20 M1 is easliy recognized by the average consumer and will soon be available everywhere. The owner's manual specifies 5K oil changes for severe service which covers 99.9% of drivers in the U.S. Don't go 10K with the break in oil, change it at 5K. In fact don't go 10K PERIOD with dino oil. Trust the old wizard on this one.

change your oil to Amsoil synthetic oil for sure ! I would wait for atleast 2500 miles before changing it. Amsoil has a 25000 mile oil for 5w-30. If you use 5w-20, use Amsoil 5w-20. It last 6 months or 7500 miles. Hope this helps. If you care to respond, my email is Rambo2810@comcast.net
