Default New Accord Owner from Vermont

Hello to all fellow accord owners,

I recently bought a used 2001 Honda Accord EX V6.
It has 66K miles on it.

I have been reading the Owners Manual for the past few days.
and there are some questions I have which might get answered here.

Although the Accord has very low miles, the manual suggests that
- At 105K miles or 7 years :
replace - timing belts & spark plugs
inspect - water pump, valve clearance & idle speed.
do the routine maintenance A & B & C

The seller told me that the 60K mile maintenance was not done and that Hondas do not need the Tune-Up for about 90-100K miles.

Also, with winter approaching I am planning to get an undercoating done to protect my car's underside.

Any tips on what should I service next would be highly appreciated.

I am also of the kind who like to get things done myself.

Can anyone recommend me a Toolkit(wrenches, spanners torquescrews/torquewrenches etc) I can buy so that I can fix smaller issues myself.

Also, where can I get the service manuals for the 2001 Honda accord.
I know that helminc has them, but I would like to know if I can get them from elsewhere cheaper.

whew that was a long post.

thanks a lot in advance.

Welcome.

As for your service, I don't know all too much about the V6s in that year. I would first find out if it has a timing belt or timing chain. Chains can last a lot longer than belts. If it is a belt than 105k sounds about right to replace it. I would always recommend replacing the water pump when doing a timing belt.

As for tools I personally use craftsmen as they are cheaper than say Snap-On or Mac. They also have lifetime warranties so any tool you break you can get replaced for free without much hassle. They also offer some pretty good sets.

Manuals you can get in the $20 range at autozone or advanced auto type stores.

On another note, where abouts in Vermont are you from? I spend a lot of time in the Brattleboro Bennington area.

v6 has a belt,, and even 4 cyl on a 2001 has a belt,, chain came on the 2003 acc 4 cyl

if car was mostly driven in town, keep in mind that the miles on the odometer do not reflect the actual miles on the belt........8 years , 66k.. i/d say start saving some money and do a t-belt kit within the next 10k which includes H2O pump , hydraulic tensioner and outer belts . As for the plugs, remove and take a look how they are wearing .........If you plan on doing a lot of work yourself get a helm manual they cost a bit more but that is the way to go .. as for tools i agree with LIve get a set at SEARS ..

The V-6 has a timing belt. You don't have 105k miles, but it's 8 years old...

I don't know what's on A, B, & C maintenance schedules, but here's some thoughts.
Drain/fill the tranny. Use Honda ATF not general Dexron.
Judge how clean it drains, clean off the magnetic drain plug.
Only about 1/3 actually drains, so if it's dirty, consider drain/fill another couple times.

I like to rinse & replace the antifreeze every few years. The anti-corrosion stuff gets used up with time, not miles.

New fresh brake fluid every couple years. That stuff absorbs moisture from the air & gets corrosive based on time, not miles.
