Default new with steering problem

Hey guys I have a 91 accord auto 4 door. Just bought it a couple of days ago n was told the powersteering pump was going. So naturally I pulled the belt off. But it didn't change anything. The car when gos thru a turn will fade a little and make me have to compensate so that it will make the turn but I only have to move the wheel maybe n 1/8th of a turn but enough to scare u when ur not expecting it. Now this car is a virgin except for what I have done to it. The previous owner put a rebuilt tranny new cv axles in it about a year ago. My thoughts on this is that there's only a couple of things that I think could be wrong either the rack is going. Or the ones I want it to be is a bad tie rod or ball joint or when the guy installed the new **** he didn't set the axles in right or didn't tighten the axle nuts enough. What is yalls though on it. Couple of my friends say rack to but want to get a few more oppinions before I rip it out. Also this is not my first honda either I have a ?0 integra that I'm currently building and shooting for 500 whp. Will see what happens with that. This accord is just a daily that I'm going to do a couple mods to. Thanks for any advise

You need to describe your problem in detail. It's not clear whether this is PS problem or suspension problem (loose steering). Worn or damaged ball jts should be examined immediately. Not safe to drive w/ damaged ball jts.

Loose rack&pinion is also a possibility. If you can move the steering wheel w/o moving the tie-rod, the rack/pinion drive may be loose.

There is a 91 Accord manual available for download. See Online Manuals post in DIY section.

good luck

Thanks for the move. No loose play the steering is real tight. When I enter a turn and start to steer it gos like it should but about 1/4 ways into the turn its like I have let go of the steering wheel a little like ur easing out of a turn bit I haven't moved the wheel and I have to turn more to make the car go in the that direction. Now my steering wheel is off center to the right when driving straight until I go into a left turn the it is to the left while going straight. Makes me think a clamp or something is loose. But the fade I'm talking about only happens for a brief second then its fine but n every turn that requires major turning. Pretty much go into a turn n have it wanting to go straight at 1/s turn and u have to turn half to make it turn. But like I said the steering is real tight except for that one little section. N its back to tight after I compensate

I think TX had a very good suggetion of things to check. Sounds like it is time to inspect everything in the suspension system.

Sounds like you are entering a turn, while in the turn the steering "goes loose" and you have to "add more wheel".

It may be possible for pinion to be so worn that it "jumps" over rack teeth.

You should be able to reproduce this problem while car is stopped w/ turning of steering wheel. If wheel motion stops at some point while steering wheel is turning the rack/pinion is slipping or steering rack support clamps are very loose.

good luck

Alright I tried turning while stop doesn't do it. Which was a good idea. I didn't think of doing that. It happens after about 15 20 mph. And its smooth when It does it. That's why I thought it might not be the rack. Poor man was exactly right on what's going on. Also checked tie rods they feel tight. N don't think it would be a ball joint cause they usually give a vibration when there gone. My driver front wheel bearing is starting to go but its not bad enough to notice yet. Like I said its real smooth almost if I was turning it myself like I over steered

Just removed the boot under the dash that covers the knuckle that holds the wheel shaft n rack shaft together now I'm not positive I found it but it may be what's wrong. When I turn the wheel back n forth the rack shaft moves left n right about 21/2 inches if not more and the bushing around it moves to. Now is that normal for this car r is it more likely the mounts r bad n need replacing

Not sure, but you may have steering column holder missing. Download the 91 Accord manual from Online Manuals links and look at the steering column info to see if something is missing or loose.

W/o steering column holder, the steering joint (U-jt) may wallow around. Is that the problem?

good luck
