Default OMG Trans Failer - pls help!

WOW I cannot believe this.

My 97 Accord 140K miles 2.2 non Vteck

My Girlfriend drives it to and from work every day

54 miles round trip

Tonight coming home with no warning the trans had a major failer.

She was driving around 50 MPH when the Check Engine light came on and the trans went out.

She coasted to the side of the road. The car would not move in any gear.

I came and could not get the car to move.

I checked the trans fluid and it was full and light pink.

The D4 light is not flashing.

I had to pull the car home with a chain.

My other car is having trouble with the alternator.

We are now left with no working car.

What could be wrong???

What should I do???

Please help!!!

Thank you

Short that service connector to see what check engine code was stored. I know you have been on the forums for a while, but you can short the service connector under the glove box to get the codes. If you have a code reader, then read the codes on the obd2 connector behind the ash tray.

Hopefully it is something simple.

As soon as the sun comes up I will go and short the connector under the glove box and see if any codes come up.
I know this is a quick jump to a conclusion but I have a feeling it is going to be the TCM.

Just that the car has always shifted perfectly and with no warning or any odd shifts the trans went out.

I want to know how hard is it to get another TCM that will work?
Right now there is one for sale on ebay close to my house. It is for the same year as my car, 1997. I have read that their are a few different part numbers on the TCMs, what are the odds that I can buy this one from ebay and it will work in my car?

I need to get the Honda working ASAP. My truck has quite a few problems to address to get it running good enough for her to drive back and forth to work. I basically do not drive it much further than I am willing to walk. Plus it is a short wheelbase lifted truck and I do not like her driving it as it can be unsafe if you drive it like it is a car.

Thank you for your help very much.

just pulled the codes by shorting the connector under the dash

Check Engine Light gave me a code 70 which is
"70 Automatic Transmission malfunction with the automatic transmission controls"

The D4 gave me a code 15 but I am not sure what that means.

So is code 70 a bad TCM?

What does code 15 mean?

Transmission code 15 from the service manual:

  • Disconnected main shaft speed sensor connector
  • Short or open in main shaft speed sensor wire
  • Faulty main shaft speed sensor

I have some updates.

I went to pull out the TCU to see what part number was on it and to my surprise their was no TCU just the ECU which I guess was combined into 1 unit.

I then pulled the backup fuse and the battery cable for a bit.

Plugged it back in and the check engine light was no longer on.

I decided to see if the car would move (I tried before reseting the TCU/ECU and it would not move at all) to my surprise it moved.

So I eased it out to the street and gave it a test run. shifted from 1st to 2nd very smoothly (even more smoothly then it normally did) slowly accelerated it up through the gears. It shifted fine into all gears. About a mile down the road I could feel that it didn't seem right. I tapped the gas it it reved up with no acceleration.

I turned it around to go back to the house and it started slipping so badly that it finally stopped moving. I turned it off, pulled the fuse and battery and waited a min. After reconnecting I started the car and it moved and got me back to the house slipping the whole time.

There is also a whirling noise coming from the transmission that was not there before.

Am I *&%!!!! real badly here?

Also around 1 1/2 years ago I had the trans cooling line break, I lost about 2 quarts of fluid before I noticed it. Being that I live in BFE I could not get any Honda fluid. I bought a few quarts of some expensive fluid (forget what it was) and some expensive additive that was supposed to make it Z1 equivalent. I would say that was a good 30k miles ago. Not sure if there is any relation.

Please someone help me.
Please do not let it be the transmission.
This could not have some at a worst time financially.

A code 15 does not always mean there is an electrical problem in the mainshaft or countershaft speed sensor circuit; code 15 can indicate a mechanical problem in the transmission.

See post #9 for location of mainshaft speed sensor:

I am at a total loss

The car is sitting on the driveway.

I few times I have gone out there and started the car.

Some of the times when I put it in gear it will not move at all, other times it goes right into reverse or d4 no problem.

What should I do? Is this something I can fix?
