first off , sorry for your dilemma .. but i really doubt the the mechanic that replaced the timing belt would think so far ahead as to purposely damage anything so he could make extra money especially if it was done 5000 miles ago,, and also especially if you trust the guy ,,
secondly it is possible like hondatechav6 said that while replacing the water pump a lot of coolant comes out of the block gushing down and could have settled in the connector ( no malicious act by the tech )
but it is also possible, if it was only water , that it could have got in there when the engine was washed by your girlfriend or while driving going through water puddles

Woot! Thanks for that desert. Your post will help ease my gfs mind. A friend of her has put it in her head that she was taken advantage of and I kept trying to tell her that it doesn't sound likely.

gfs= girlfriend's ...plm= problem ,,,cpk,,= crank positon sensor...tmw= tomorrow b/c= because
at least that's the way i interpetedd it ..
