Default Power steering question

When stopped before making a turn, or even moving slow and making a turn, it's almost as if the Accord doesn't have power steering and we have to fight with it. It has plenty of fluid in it. That was the first thing we checked. Could the pump be going out? It's fine at higher speeds, turns easy - it's just when moving slow or stopped that we have issues. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

The power steering system uses fluid pressure to help turn the wheels. The system generates more pressure when you are going slow to help make turning the wheels easier. When going fast, you don't need as much pressure to make turning the steering wheel easier.

The problem can be from the pressure controls that are part of the power steering pump or possibly the valves in the power steering rack. There are pressure tests you can do, but they look like you need special fittings and a pressure gauge. The pressures are very high, so I'd say to avoid it.

I'd say make sure the power steering belt is tensioned properly and not loose. Do you hear any belt squealing?

I'd start with the easiest item to replace and that is the power steering fluid. Only use Honda power steering fluid.

Since the power steering pump is very simple to replace, you can replace the pump knowing that it may not fix your power steering problem.
