I've had the same problem. my spark plugs were covered in oil and it was causing my car to idle rough. I changed the valve cover gasket and oil seals. the whole job took about 30 minutes.

Absolutely - the misfiring can be caused by oil over the spark plugs. In fact, if they're bad you might need new plugs not just clean up the old ones.

Easy job. Watch the sparkplug tube seals. They have top & bottom so be sure they're right-side up.

Also I think, please be sure to loosen the valve lash adjusters before removing and installing the rocker assym-getting to the lower seals-might be wrong on the gen, I've got to get a better memory. Almost no matter where the timing is set when removing or installing one or more rockers will be trying to compress the valve springs, hence having the adjusters loose so that nothing "bends".

MY 91 accord did the same thing last week, just after buying it. It turned out to be a bad coil, cap and rotor. hope this helps.

Since he actually had oil down in the sparkplug tubes, I'd say deal with that problem first.

I've had lot's of leaking oil into spark plug wells w/o problems. I doubt that's your problem, but relatively easy to fix to find out if that's the proboem. New spark plug tube seals and new orings under the valve train assembly. Get a shop manual to guide removal of valve train and cam assembly.

After days of work and almost 3 hundred dollars spent my car is running.

As some of you had mentioned: a bad coil.


I also replaced the distrubtor, plugs, wires and main relay.

Either the bad coil or the plugs covered in oil caused the relay to blow as a warning.
It now is running decent.
