thats right but you can still guess whats most likely wrong by the way your car is running and if your check engine light is on..say an O2 sensor? that is the main reason that your check engine light is on..unless for newer cars the code could be pulled up as a loose gas cap..

You HIT the Nail On The Head RTexasF, there are enoughf mechanics out there already guessing about why the check engine light is on...best way to find out is to go to your local AutoZone where you live and let them scan your ride for FREE...
Sensor is the best answer seeing as tho thats what makes those lights go on anyway...
