Short Shift Adapter Install
I installed my short shift adapter today on my 2000 LX.
Pic #2 iswhat the thing looked like when it came out of the box. It's a Megan Racing short shift adapter. Notice no name brand stamped on it anywhere. Refer to my "Short Shifter Dasappointment" thread for details on my feelings about the part.
Here's how it's done:
First things first. If you don't have anti theft in your radio(luckily I don't) or you know the code to get it working again, disconnect thebattery (negative first, then positive) You don't want to be messing around and have the airbag go off on you!
Next, you do not need to take off the shift ****. You canfold the bootand attached plastic up over the **** and have plenty of access to install your adapter. I took my **** off, but regretted it because I accidentally tore a small part of the seam on my shift boot when I took the **** off
Now..Take out the cupholder. Easy...just flip the lid open and pull up on the corners. Pops right out & pops right back in.
After you take out the cupholder, reach under the plastic where the cupholder used to be and pull up on the two corners. Then you need to stick your thumb down into the shift boot at the front and pull up there to pop the front loose. If this doesn't make sense, someone ask and I can post pictures of this part.
OK. Pic#1 is the first bolt you need to take loose. You need a 10mm socket(or wrench)

When the bolt is loose, the shifter itself will fall limp.

The adapter is SUPPOSED TO FIT on the stock bolt that you just unhooked the cable from. My adapter's hole was not big enough. So I used some redneck enginuity and jammed a screwdriver in the hole and twisted it around for about 15 minutes to shave off enough metal to allow the d*** thing to fit over the stock bolt

The adapter goes over the stock bolt like so.

Now put the stock nut you took off in step #1 on the stock bolt that is now through the hole (in thepic, it is below the gold looking bolt)in your adapter. You don't need the washer that you took off in step #1. Keep it somewhere safe in case you ever decide to take the adapter off.

Unscrew the bolt that came with your adapter so the shift cable can fit over it. The bolt on my adapter was 12mm.

Tighten the bolt through the shifter cable. The cable will stay in place as there is a little notch on the adapter for it to fit in.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the little screw that you need the included tiny allen wrench for. It is on the back (facing the rear of your car when adapter is installed). Most instructions for like adapters say to put loctite on the threads before you tighten it, but I didn't. I don't see any way in h*** this thing is going to come loose just because I didn't put loctite on the threads of a screw that weighs less than a paper clip.
Put your shift boot back on, snap all the plastic trim back down, put your cupholder back in,and you're good to go.

So...all in all I am pretty satisfied. It DOES reduce my shift throws by a noticable amount. And besides the fact that some moron did not make the hole big enough to fit over the stock bolt[sm=boosign.gif], I was at least able to get it on there.
It only cost me $25 plus shipping, so I guess I'm glad I bought this one instead on a $90 dc sports adapter that isthe same thingexcept it's blue and says "DC Sports" on it.

I was also thinking today how much faster it makes my car feel now that I can shift faster. I would definitely recommend an adapter or shortening the shifter.
The shifter itself is not shorter. I was looking for a true short shifter, but was unable to find one. sir_nasty provided me a link to one, but I had already bought this adapter. Go to my "short throw shifter disappointment" thread and you'll see everything.
The shift quality is better. The throw distance is noticeably shorter. It is a little stiffer. Sometimes it is harder to go into gears if I am stopped and trying to get it either into reverse or 1st, but other than that I wouldn't say it is any harder to get it into the gears.
The adapter I bought only cost $25 plus shipping and it was definitely worth it.

I'm glad to hear that it was at least worth it in the long run! Keep that alen wrench in your car.... I had a shift **** that used the same screws and it started to back out on me a little bit because of the vibration....
Yaeh I think it is still in my car. But I may need to check. If you saw on the thread the hole in the adapter wasn't big enough so I had to shave off some metal to fit it on there. That thing is jammed on so tight it is not moving anywhere anytime soon!
