Default so...

my friend has a honda accord which has some issues...first thing, its an F22A1 automatic trans...when i started it..on the "Park" position the rpm's were bouncing from 1k to 2k continuosly and did not stop until put into drive...i checked her spark plugs and wires and was so amazed to see that all holes were filled with oil! the positive battery terminal was also dirty...i'd like to help this friend out but where should i start...i feel since her spark plug holes had oil in all of them, theres nothing i should be doing? how long will it run like this? odometer is reading 248,xxx but said when she bought it off some guy he had said the engine was swapped with a new one (which i think is BS)...thanks again guys...1992 Accord LX 4Dr btw

if its an F22B1 (vtec) on an LX, it was swapped. EX has F22B1, LX has F22B2.

also, i doubt this will answer it, but it does that to me if the brake booster isnt hooked up correctly. like up/down/up/down (non-irratic, just wavvy).
try resetting the ECU, and check all your vaccuum tubes.

In the DIY section, there is a writeup for Surging Idle that will guide you on how to check/repair the idle problem. Basically you want to check if the idle control valves (or throttle plate) are leaking air into the intake.

As for oil in the spark plug tubes, you should get a gasket set for the valve cover from Advance Auto Parts or Autozone. This is a commone problem, and you search the posts on this site, because this has come up before. I like FelPro gaskets. That set should have three types of gaskets. One for the valve cover, four gaskets that seal off the spark plug tubes, and the grommets for the bolts for the valve cover. The set costs around $20.

Just clean off the pos. battery cable with some sandpaper to ensure a good connection.

Its a valve cover gasket kit, it comes with all of the seals. Also replace the PCV Valve, valve grommet and its hose, good insurance and they are cheap too. When you pull the plugs to drain the oil into the cylinders, use some carb cleaner to clean out the holes, then crank the motor to blow most of this stuff out of the cylinders, put a towel over the plug holes to catch some of this stuff so it doesnt make a mess under the hood area. I also highly recommend that you replace the plug wires also, not knowing how long the oil has soaked into the plug boots, they could be saturated and beyond saving (cleaning) and will continue to cause ignition problems. Get a small tube of RTV and put a dab in the sharp corners where the valve cover gasket goes against the head.

Here's a link with pix: http://filtsai.com/accord/valve_cover_gasket/index.php

Look on her engine to the left of the exhaust manifold. The engine code will be marked there. If it was an F22B1 it would say "VTEC" in huge letters on the valve cover.
