Question Spark plugs

94 Accord ex

I just took my spark plugs out and they were filthy and had gas on them. I guess this is where the smell of gas was coming from. Anyways is it alright to put new plugs in and just run the car and try and burn it out? Or do I need to do something to get the gas out before I put the new plugs in?

Gas is pretty volatile, so leaving the spark plugs out for an hour or two should allow most of the gas to evaporate.

You could blow out each cylinder with air if you have a compressor.

Well they werent wet or anything, well one was. I took them out and replaced them adn started the car. Ill take them out in the moring and let it dry up. If there was a little gas in the cylinder would it cause it to run funny? I mean I tried to start it the other day and it started then when going to put it into gear it would die. So I just left it alone for the day. The following day I had to go to work and it wouldnt stay started at all. I thought there was maybe a spark issue cause I was smelling fuel and it was backfiring. That is when I check the plugs and they had a bad gas oder and were burnt up pretty bad. It is now starting fine, idle flux's a little, but still has the issues of dying if I take it and put it in gear.

Have you done other maintenance like distributor cap and rotor?

I would start there, then see if the car runs better.

Changing the plugs doesn't fix the source of the fuel. Maybe an injector is leaking down? Maybe the FPR has ruptured & putting fuel into the manifold thru the vacuum hose?

Is there a way to check these? I mean I dont have any tools on me right now but a few simple things. I have a feeling the answer is no, lol.

I pulled the codes and Im getting a 1 (HOS2), 3 (MAP), 14 (IAC), 20 (ELD)
This all started when I was messing with that damn IAC.

FPR (fuel pressure regulator) is on the end of the fuel rail, with a larger tube (fuel return) and a small vacuum hose. After cranking, pull off the vacuum hose. There should be NO fuel in that hose.

A leaking injector would cause the fuel pressure (in the rail) to drop down after you turn off the engine - so you need a fuel pressure gauge. Maybe if you pull off the big rubber intake air hose (from the air cleaner) a little while after turning off, you can smell for gasoline. I think you should NOT be smelling fuel in there, but you have to rule out the FPR problem first.

Alright I checked the FPR. There was no fuel on or off and there was a good suction in the line. In not to sure but the othere thing right buy the FRP looks almost like it on the thremostat housing and has a sensor on it. It has no suction, is this right?

JimBlake I was talking to you on another thread and I think this might all tie together. You sent me a diagram cause we ware talking about a leak. The leak I due believe is on the part right up uonder the throttle body. I guess its the part that is the fast idle or FITV, sorry. The leak is not like a drizzle but a steady drip. Could this play a part?

Also where the bottom radiator hose wraps around and hooks into the thermostat housing is a part with a sensor. Im not sure what is is but it has no suction. Ihas a vacuume like that is right next to the FRP.

Its hard to tell exactly what components you are talking about. If your vacuum hoses are the original, then they should have a number printed on them. I attached a pic of the vacuum system on your accord.

What kind of leak are you talking about? Air leak, coolant leak, etc?

Alright see the one that has the circle on it and looks like it has the #16 the EGR that is the one that has no suction to it. The leak is a coolant leak at the FITV where the coolant hose hooks into it right at the front.
