Default Starting Issues

Hi there. I am the proud owner of a 1986 Honda Accord LX which has recently been giving me problems. I am also a poor college student so therefore need to try and solve this issue myself with my limited automotive knowledge. Lets get to the point, my car will simply not start. I took the battery out(which is less than a year old) and took it to autozone to have it checked and charged. It came back as being good and then I had it fully charged. I put the battery back in, and it will still not crank. I am getting full power to all my electrical areas, but the engine will simply not turn over. It only makes a clicking noise and the lights dim slightly. Also when I try and start it, the negative terminal on the battery becomes extremly hot. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciate because as I stated before, I have a very limited knowedge of automobiles. Thanks and PLEASE HELP, this is my only means of transportation to work.

From your description it sounds like the starter has gone south in a handbasket.
unhook the battery and then you can remove the starter.
Often times the contacts in the starter just get worn down.
Fairly easy to replace.

Thanks so much for replying to my post for help on this problem. I have been outside looking under the hood trying to figure out where abouts this "STARTER" is located on the engine. Could you please point me in the general area to where this part is located on the engine. I am also calling around for prices on this part now as well.

Thanks again for your help. [sm=bounceybounce.gif]

Follow the postitive battery cable from the battery and it will lead you to the starter. Also make sure that the battery cable connection to the starter is clean and secure. The starter is mounted near the flywheel (where the engine meets the tranny). The radiator hoses should run near it.

I found a pic of what it looks like. You will only see the left side of the starter. Have a friend try to start the car and hit the starter with the handle of screwdriver. If the car starts, then there is a problem with the connections in the starter. We can give you advice on what to do from there.

Good luck.
