Default Surging after timing belt/water pump change

97 Accord LX, AT, 4 Cylinder, non V-tech.

After doing a timing belt and water pump change on my 97 Accord I'm having trouble at about 3,000 RPMs. Check engine light is on and whenever the car reaches about 3,000 RPMs before a gear change it stumbles/surges a little, it feels like 3 or 4 quick pulses and then changes gear and seems to be back to normal operation. The car is fine at idle with no pulsing or vibration, and otherwise drives smooth. Sometimes it can run through all the gears without the stumbling/pulsing. Any Suggestions?

I drained the cooling system as described in the manual, and then refilled it following the proper procedure as well, i.e. opening the bleeder screw and filling until it ran steady with no air bubbles.

Your check engine light is on, so find out what code is stored on your ECU. Stop by an autozone and have them read the code then post on here. The code will be P and 4 numbers, i.e. P1234.

The connector for the 96 is behind the ash tray.

P1361 = TDC sensor intermittent
That sensor is down at the crankshaft pulley, & the wiring runs along the back side of the oilpump / lower timing cover. Loose/dirty/corroded plug? It's possible the sensor was disturbed during the timing belt job.

I'll check the resistance at the plug. I guess If it was disturbed doing the timing belt i'll have to remove the crank pulley again to get behind the lower timing cover. Is there any way to check the position sensor is working properly before I put everything back together for the second time?

There's the resistance check, but if it's an intermittent problem (like the error # suggests) then maybe it only gets flaky under certain conditions while running?

Turns out the sensor was moved out of place changing the belt, got the sensor moved back and everything runs fine. Thanks for all the help, would have taken forever to diagnose without this forum.
