Trans fluid leak

Default Trans fluid leak

I have a small transmission fluid leak. It appears to be coming from what I believe is the speedometer cable adapter that is mounted at the bottom of the trans. Is it possible to leak there? I am not sure if there is a gasket/o'ring there or not. I can't find an exploded view of the part. Any help would be helpful.

Found the leak, it was actually the axel shaft seal wasn't seated all the way. Was able to tap it back in and fix the leak

Good job. I was actually kinda wondering about the cable... There's no speedometer cable (VSS is an electic sensor). That cable was probably the shift cable.

Spoke too soon about the leak being fixed. Anybody know what is involved in replacing the shaft seal ( will the axel slide right out ) It is on the driver side.

V-6 or 4-cyl engine? Those may as well be completely different cars, especially as far as the transmission is concerned.

Anyway, did you get the axle out of the steering knuckle to tap it back into the differential? That's a big part of the job.

Drain trans fluid ('cause it'll just run out of the axle opening). Remove axle. Pry out the seal. Press in a new seal. Put it all back together. Don't forget to put fluid back in the trans.

Replace the right side axel shaft seal, but it is still leaking. Have a feeling I may need to replace the axel also. Has anybody had to do that before.

Sure, lots of people have had to replace axles, mostly for bad CV joints. But sometimes the surface where the seal presses, gets corroded, damaged, or ????

Originally it was because the axle wasn't snapped in all the way? Had you done some work? Did it just pop out by itself? If it was partly popped out for awhile, that can damage the seal, but it seems kinda strange for that to damage the axle.

Well, when the differential bearings go bad they allow the inner CV joint to move up/down & side to side.

Yeah, check that out. From underneath, grab the axle right near the transmission & try to move it up/down & side/side.

Hondadude, what do you think is allowable motion? Maybe 1/32-inch or less?
