Default Transmission Problem

the car just started this a couple of days ago. I'm guessing it is what you call limp mode, the transmission will randomly not shift out of high gear. the D4 light will also stay lit. I can still put it in park and reverse, but drive is just the one gear, i can temporarily fix it by disconnecting the battery and it will shift fine for a while, but keeps jumping back into limp mode. totally confused.

Have you checked for transmission codes? See the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum. There is a link on checking codes. Let us know if the D4 light or the check engine light gives you any codes.

I would do some electrical testing first. You can test the solenoids by applying voltage and listening for a click.

The code 15 for the mainshaft speed sensor is the one I would try to repair first to see if the other problems go away.

is that the sensor located on the top back of the transmission, sort of under the throttle body?

I looked in the 91 manual you can download and the UK 93 manual, and there is no code 13. There is a code 13 in my 94 manual that is for the baro sensor.

In the 91 and 93 manual, code 15 is for the mainshaft speed sensor. It is on the transmission facing the front bumper. It should have a two pin connector with an orn/blu and a a wht/blu wire going to it.

I thought code 13 for Baro sensor is in the ECU code list, not a transmission code.

I'm not sure, I just went off the list of codes PA had in the little DIY link, and neither my Haynes or Chilton's manuals have a list of TCU codes, hell only the CHilton's has the list of ECU codes. those are the error codes that my D4 light tossed out yesterday. I tested the solenoids and they are both clicking fine when I put voltage to them.
