Default transmission shifting problem

I have a 1992 Honda Accord EX sedan with 185,000 miles. I have an intermitant transmission shifting problem. (auto trans.) When I turn the ignition to start the car, it turns over, but won't start. The Park indicator on the dash is hi-lighted, and also, the drive hi-lighter blinks. The transmission will not come out of park. If I bypass the brake safety switch, by inserting a key into the bypass slot on the console, and move the shift lever through the gears a couple of times, then put it in neutral, it will start. Sometimes, I have to do this a number of times before it starts. Anybody out there have any ideas as to the problem, and how to fix it? Thank you for any info.
