so i have a 2004 that recently wont start.i replaced the igintion switch in stearing wheel, still no start, i replaced the starter because it was making a horrible noise when trying to start (loud screaching horn)also heard slight buzzing sound from driver side kickpanelfusebox.) after replacing the starter the problem went away.when i replaced i checked wires and connections evrything looked fine. today i go and try to start it and you hear a slight click from under hood(i think starter, waitng for friend to verify.0 all lights on dash come on. none of the lights dim when attempting to start. you hear the fuel pump run. battery reads 12.51v when car is off. i swapped the relays under hood still nothing:confused::confused::confused::confused::co nfused:

Welcome to HAF.

Can you verify the voltage on the small wire to the starter?

At rest, a battery can give you the voltage of ~12 but that is not a good test - there could be a bad cell and under load there is not the amp's to do anything. So I would suggest pulling the battery and taking it to a parts store and have it tested.

Next, once you ge the car running.....I'd get the codes checked, you have some other issues going on as well.....based upon the pic....the cel and d4 are trying to tell you something is not right.

thank you for responding and for helping. waiting for friend and ill check the voltage on the small wire.do you know what the acceptable voltage should be there? i got the battery replaced a year ago in but ill go have that checked too.

just verified with my friend that it is starter making the "one click" noise when trying to start. also my multimeter reads 00.1-00.7 DC volt when attempting starts on the small black wire to starter

On the small wire you should be in the +11V range.

A battery can fail for many reasons, so having it tested can't hurt - they can show voltage but under load will drop out or not have enough amp's to power the starter.

At the same time, all ends of "ALL" cabels should be clean and tight......check under the little "boot(s)" on the battery end....the cable(s) can have a bad connection ther the actual cabel joins to the clamp.

just went to napa they said battery was bad.battery cca is 450 the napa machine read 660 cca and with voltage on battery was 12.76 and trickled down as we stood there 12.75, 12.74, 12.73. drove to auto zone they said it was good. im going to take out the starter to get that tested and battery again at oriellys this time. also gunna check ALL cables wire brush all connections thanks again for your help

just came back from orielly and they said battery was good there printer broke so was unable to see numbers for battery. the starter got tested came back as a FAIL. i got a new one and now puttting everything back together

so you've got 2 starters to now start car (hopefully). OK, good enough, but maybe learn from this.
Are both new starters from Oreilly?

For me, I want a car part to work right out of the box, and to last 10 yrs, so
I go to NAPA or the dealer. Based on experience...

Anything mass produced will have failures now and then. I went thru 5 starters once before I got a good one
