Loud exhaust around cops?
Anyone ever get pulled over for a loud exhaust? I just got my new exhaust installed and it's damn loud. To all you people out there with loud exhausts like mine, what do you do around cops, especially if one's behind you? The only trick I have up my sleeve is to put my car in neutral, for some reason the exhaust sounds lessens a lot. Anyone else know any tricks for automatics?

I just drive...most they can give me is a warning.

i would be upset to if i ever got pulled over for a loud exhaust. i think they should worry about more important things than how loud i am. There are worse infractions out there, like the extra huge trucks with the extra huge tires that could run over and destroy much more than how noisey i am.
My parents have alwayz told me to pull over if a cop is ever behind me. slow down as much as possible til he passes. and try to not look to concerned. |

lol BlkCurrantKord, my cousin got pulled over and received a ticket for a loud exhaust, that's why I'm worried.

if they are heading the other way or something i usually just put it in neutral, when they are behind me i usually just maintain the same rpm because the exhaust gets louder when you accel or decelerate, and then take the first side road.
but if i ever got pulled over for having too loud exhaust i would be extremely po'd. because there are harleys that are twice as loud as my car that they never pull over |

I was pulled over for my exaust in ohio, but the area i was in was very biased against people with modified vehicles. In nebraska i havent been pulled over once for my exaust.
Its all going to depend on how strict they are with the noise ordinance and just the cops in general. |

RE: Loud exhaust around cops?
I've been in front of cops a lot of times and they've never pulled me for my exhaust. If they did I would really be verypissed. If you take a drive out into my city for five minutes you're going to find a truck or car with loudflowmasters(a million mustangs where I live)or something done to their exhaust.

I live in oklahoma and the only time i ever got pulled over for my exhaust was one time i was racing a prelude (smoked him btw) and there was a cop over the bridge and he heard me gettin on it... he couldnt pull me over for speeding because he couldnt see me so instead he pulls me over and writes me a warning for my muffler...lol like thats gonna make me change it...

RE: Loud exhaust around cops?
You could always get a silencer. Or the make electirce valves for exhaust which redirects the gasses either straight out or to diff. mufflers so you can have a hopped up car on the street quiet, then flip the switch and she can breathe better.

Forgot to mention, that I think cops usually let the exhaust slide because look at how loud Harleys are. They just use it to pull you over if they are suspicious or to tack on another ticket.

RE: Loud exhaust around cops?
Just drive conservatively around cops. I was down at Ocean City last week....(ricers galore)...not one got stopped for an obnoxious exhaust and I'm talking about coffee/fart cans (4.5" +)

RE: Loud exhaust around cops?
ive been pulled over before in my friends 97 accord for having a loud exhaust..... but usually all they can give you usually is a fix-a-ticket.... so my firend just put on a silencer the next day and the first cop he sees he asked them to write it off... but you have to remember when its quota week they will pull you over for anything.....

ORIGINAL: kevin_nguyen0862 ... but you have to remember when its quota week they will pull you over for anything..... I totally agree on the Harley thing. My freaking next door neighbor has one and he will crank that thing and let it warm up for like 15 to30 minutes before he drives it anywhere. It sounds like thunder or a train is in my attic. Sometimes he does it at like 6 A.M. on a Saturday. Then when he drives it home at night he leaves it running for like 5 to 15minutes before he turns it off. If I ever had a loud exhaust and I got pulled over for it, I would ask the cop what is an "acceptable noise level." Do they have a test where they measure how many decibels the sound is? |

When do you know when it's their quota week? So that I can prepare to roll down my windows and everything.

RE: Loud exhaust around cops?
Well, I live in Puerto Rico and cops always bother with modified cars.... i use to have an exaust (planning on buying a new catback soon) and i always got pulled over, even at low rpm and almost no noise.... here's the trick: i've been to court a few times and the cops never used the machine to reads the decibels emitted by my exaust, since "law has to go beyond all reasonable doubt", if the cops say it was loud, there's no proff of that, so i can just say that it wasn't and that's it!!! (been to court 6 times for driving tickets and once for running from the cops, not a good idea.... but the case fell because the cop was out of duty!!!!)
