Default modified intake question

just wondering if instead of buying a sri, can you modify your stock intake by removing the resonator box and cutting a bigger hole on the air filter box to gain more air in. do you guys think that would do just fine? sort of a sri but free. i figured that it would stay cooler and not worry about the heat from the engine if you keep the stock rather than the steel pipe. hope to hear your opinions and comments, thanks

i agree with YeuEmMaiMai. i mean if you just want to have the sound then i am pretty sure that you could just take the air filter out and it will make that deep loud intake sound. but there is a risk at it though.lol i used to do that to my old honda back in high school trying to show off. lol

Don't waste your time trying to get the stock set up into something that it is not. Typically the tube that goes from the air cleaner box to the intake manifold will have siliencing resevoirs attched to it which kill efficiencey but make the car quiet. Taking out the air filter from you stock air cleaner box is not going to give you any performance, you might just suck up bugs and filth into your engine.

thanks guys, but what i meant was to keep the air filter box with a bigger hole on the bottom of it and put it back with a drop in k&n filter in the filter box.how about that? would that still work?

depending upon where the resonator is in the intake, you can remove it and get some gains. I had a 92 sable that had the resonator in the intake tube and once I removed it, I got more air into the engine....it was worth about 10 HP on that engine.........

the resonator box is right under the air filter box. so if i make the tube area connection from the resonator box to the air filter box bigger like twice the size of the tube then i should get more air in because the resonator box has been remove, right? would this at least get some HP gains about 1 or 2 or at least the throttle response would be more quicker??

I think I know what your talking about. I know someone who has done it. If you plan on getting a drop in K&N filter why not just take the air filter box and the baffle box off and attach a cone filter onto the intake tubing? Also, SRIs aren't really very expensive so, might be worth a look. I wouldn't expect too large of gains on it if it is a 4cyl motor though. You probably won't notice much of a difference, but the sound is great.

thanks man, i did what i mentioned before to see what effect it will have on my car. you are right about the sound.it sounds louder now when you accelerate and it is pretty cool! also my throttle response is quicker. i don't see much change on horsepower but as i said it gets up and go much quicker when opened wide. Now i'm thinking of changing my exhaust to a magnaflow catback system just to help my car breath better. what do you think of that exhaust? would that help with H.P? and how much?

Well to maiximize your engines breathing you should also get a pair of headers with that cat back and your less restrictive intake. You wil probably gain a few ponies from a cat back.
