Default 2004 Accord questions

I am buying a 2004 Accord from a girlfriend with 167,000 miles on it. I know she has taken great care of her car, however, I need advice on some issues. She purchased the car new and has done mostly in-town driving in it (she has a pet sitting business which requires back and forth trips 2-3 times a day to various in-town locations). She is diligent about changing the oil every 3,000 miles. She does not remember having the timing belt/chain replaced and I need to know if this needs to be done immediately or if they go longer than the mileage the car has on it. I know that Honda's last forever but what other expenses might I be faced with? My daughter will be driving this car and only does in-town driving (maybe 150 miles per week). Thanks so much for your help!

What engine?

4-cyl has a chain that doesn't need to be replaced.

V-6 has a belt and if that's it you're on borrowed time.

true, what JimBlake said is right, the I4's have a timing chain which does not need to be replaced, maybe adjusted, while only the V-6's have the belt, which means if you are purchasing the V6...spend the $$ to get the belt and water pump replaced.

As for oil changes, Honda's don't need oil changes every 3,000 miles...it usually averages 5,000-8,000 and this is how I take care of my Honda..and how I've taken care of all my previous Hondas.

Aside from the belts, you have the O2 sensors which can be costly but easy to repair depending on which one needs to be replaced, than there's the tune-up, transmission fluid replacement...but nothing that's going to break the bank BUT keep in mind local driving is harder on the powertrain than highway driving

Thankfully, it's a four cylinder and, yes, I will be buying her car. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your quick response. Have a great day!

The owners manual for that car probably calls for oil changes every 10,000 miles. For in-town driving I wouldn't go that long. 5k to 7k is probably pretty good. Maybe towards the 5k end when it includes wintertime.
