Unhappy just bought my first honda!

and its about to die.

Its an '87 accord sedan LX. automatic. almost everything is original( yup dry rotted all over under the hood- hoses etc) please forgive me I know next to nothing about cars but Im trying to get into this and get the car going well ( kids gotta get to and from school!) I picked it up real cheap $450- i'm hoping i didnt get ripped off. It does run- it is real hard to start most of the time and will stall out on idle all over. which is great at a red light. I know the hot air hose is completely detatched from the carb and at least a couple screws are missing from the lid of the carb as well- inside is a filthy filter that looks like it doesnt fit properly at all- it shifts a little hard too---have i come to the right place?

Welcome!
Yeah, you're at the right place for help like that. I'll leave this post here as a "welcome-introduction" but post your questions in the "general tech" section. Look out for a grey-beard guy who calls himself HondaDude - this'll give him flashbacks to when your car was new...

You want to be the mechanic? Or do you want to be able to talk intelligently when you take it to a shop? That'll help us decide how to answer your questions.

If you do it yourself, it'll probably be a process of replacing all the ratty hoses & stuff. Maybe there won't be ONE SINGLE thing that suddenly makes it all work nice, but more likely a combination of 100 little things.

Get the general tune-up stuff up to date.
Get an air filter; get new spark plugs (unless you know they're already new).

Some night when the car's completely cold; open the hood, start it, and turn off all the lights. Look for the distributor cap & sparkplug wires for arcing, like a dull blue glow. If so, then get new plug wires, distributor cap, whichever is arcing.

Default Thanks!

thats for the greetings guys! I do plan of trying to do some of the simplier fixes/ maintenance stuff myself ( maybe its just me, but I always feel like the wool is being pulled over my eyes at a repair shop) being a novice though I know there are gonna be things I just cant tackle and will need a pro- so I'll need to know or at least sound like I know what I'm talking about..I'll post my q's in the general tech. Thanks again!
