Default My humble little commuter car

First post

I recently acquired a 1997 Accord LX that was sitting in a impound lot waiting to be crushed, so for the awfully high price of free (my dad owns the impound lot) I got a 97 Accord that was a little rough on the outside. I had a key made, put a new battery in it, and it started right up
our first day together <3

it had a 500w amp and a pair of 12 inch subs in the trunk, none of it hooked up, and I wanted useable trunk space so I sawed the sub box in half and am only running one sub. wouldn't you know it, the head unit won't eject CD's anymore >
couple months later, a little cleaner and with new tires

I'm a college student, and my other ride, although loved, isn't the best for daily transportation.

I rather like my accord, its got 190,XXX on the odometer, fires right up, and is getting 25 mpg in town
However, some suggestions as to which engine oil/filters and automatic transmission filters to run and the like would be nice, although I don't think this car is going to be affected by stuff like that near as much as my isuzu
Looking forward to having more questions than answers :/

Nice price for that Accord (jealous)
There is no Transmission filter
As for oil that is an often debated subject.
I personally run the cheapest oil and filter that I can find.

First couple oil changes you can watch to see if it's very dirty. If it is, then use cheap oil & change VERY OFTEN for awhile. Later on do something better.

Honda automatics really like to use Honda ATF.

Thanks for all the welcomes!

Jim Blake, how often would you recommend I change it while trying to clean it? This car see's alot of short around town runs and occasionally a 5 mile stretch of freeway

and suggestions as far as actual oil? I put Mobil 5w30 (dino) in it for the first change, I'd really like to make the switch to a full synthetic and change it every 8-10k

Just because it was headed for the crusher, I made a wild unfounded assumption that maybe it wasn't well maintained. If your first oil chage gives you really dirty cruddy oil, then I'd start changing it every 1000 miles with normal petroleum oil & a good filter (Purolator Pure-1 is good). Maybe sooner if you see the oil (on the dipstick) getting dirty. You're using the oil to rinse the crud out from the engine.

After doing that a couple times, I'd judge by how clean the oil comes out. When you reach a point where the oil stays kinda clean for 4,000 or 5,000 miles, then you can change to synthetic.

Personally, I only use synthetic on the Saabs (turbo engines). Castrol GTX on the Hondas.

trans filter? never knew there was such a thing, is it along with the dunclator valve and muffler bearings?
i ONLY use honda oil and honda trans fluid when i first got my accord, then after the mods i started using only royal purple..never do that again. all it did was burn. was getting much more black smoke out the back when taking it to higher revs, and would grind under faster shifting and quick changes, went back to honda oils and lubs, and all was good.

and you making that assumption is my fault
I will spare you all the details, but when we get a car that stays a long time, they all get sent to the crusher and they get sorted there

Thanks for the advice, I guess GTX High Mileage it is
