Hi Im new to the accord world and figured I would check you guys out. I drive a 1997 Honda accord LX 4-door automatic. Im trying to find out how to improve the gas mileage on my car, not rice it out. So if anyone has any suggestions on where to look and start any help would be great. 1st on the list is the usual intake headers and exhaust, less restriction the better right? Thanks for your time and hope to hear from some of you.
Most people notice a loss in gas mileage with those mods, but we believe that's because it makes the fun car to drive, thus more pedal mashing. Making sure filters, plugs, PCV valve, vacuum lines, etc. are in good condition will help get you towards better mileage.
Welcome to the site. If you want my advice, to get better gas mileage, slow down. The window sticker of the '08 EX-L 4 cyl auto states 24/30. I am averaging 29 with a combined city and highway. for the life of the car (granted that only about 5,000 miles). I do the speed limit and actually under on one stretch of highway when there is no one behind me (speed limit is 65, I do 55). When I had my Insight I was AMAZED how much speed made a difference in my MPG. When I did 55 MPH, I would get 60 MPG, when I did 75, I would get 50 MPG. Speed makes a big difference.
You can also take out anything that is unnecessary from your car. Weight is also a killer. People would be amazed how much stuff we carry in out cars that we don't use. You don't realize how much until you sell a car and have to remove everything in it that you are keeping. I took out WAY too much stuff from that Insight. I probably could have gotten a couple more MPG if I removed some of that junk I was carrying with me that I never used.
Remove any windsocks. These team logo flags and wind socks create a lot of drag on a vehicle. It may not seem like much, but it all adds up.
I hope these ideas help you.

Things to consider taking out: spare bottle of washer fluid, spare oil, spare coolant, golf clubs.
Also, due to my speeding tickets, averaging 60 on regular highways and 75-80 on the freeways, couple with a manual transmission, has bumped my gas mileage from 24 mpg to 34 mpg. I used to speed like a mad man whenever the road was clear, but if I do now I lose my license so... yeah.
