new to the forum. just bought 06 ex-l accord 4dr 5sp manual loaded with everything but nav.
this is our second honda... we have a 03 element ex also.
really like the accord 5sp man... getting 27.7 mpg around town here in florida. this as all city driving
but not using the ac much yet. is any body else getting this type of mileage? i'm only gettng 21-22 with the element and 19-20 using the ac.

 

that mileage sounds about right from what I've seen posted elsewhere... How many miles do you have on it? If you're at less than about 7500 miles then chances are your mileage will continue to improve until that point.

Your cars too new to get the gas mileage that it's supposed to get...don't forget you have to drive it perfectly just like they do on the controlled track that they test them on..

i have about 1600 miles on my accord.
i've checked the gas mileage last 4 fill-ups and each time it has improved!

 

It should continue to improve over the next couple of thousand miles (providing you don't start driving it harder...) so that's some pretty good mileage to start with!

 

I got a 2006 EX-L w/o Nav about a month ago. So far, I'm pretty disappointed with gas mileage. I'm averaging about 26 MPG with equal parts city and highway, and I don't drive the car hard at all. My 5th tank I got 25.4. The best tank I got about 27. Unlike some posters I'm not seeing a steady improvement from tank to tank. Instead I'm seeing it go up and down with each tank. I have about 1500 miles so far. What are othe owners seeing? I'm really curious. My 1996 Accord EX routinely got around 30 mpg from the very start. 400 miles per tank was my standard. The light on my 2006 goes on about 325.

new cars will not reach their optimal milage for at least 10K miles. I would not worry about it at this point in time

With my 94 I get an average of 24mpg all city driving/idling and with my 98 i get 24-28 average depening upon mix of city and hwy driving/ 94 has 144K and 98 has 98K

 

Could someone please explain to me why the mileage would improve over time? With the high-precision and close tolerances that are possible in the manufacturing of engines these days, I don't understand the process with which they would get better over time. Any pointers to articles or other postings that explain this would be appreciated.

I know what you mean about close tolerances but the engine is still tight, they take a little time to settle in. In the days gone by there used to be a running in period of around 1000-1500 miles. With the better manufacturing techniques that is not so critical, however personally I would still "run" my car in for the first 1000 or so miles keeping it below 3000rpm. Just my opinion of course.

My 96 accord gets about 33-35mpg (Imperial gallon which is about 4.5 litres) and 400 miles from a full tank 14.3 imperial gallons 17.2 US gallons

 

when a car is new everything is still tight and has not broken in. C&D did a test with a few cars new and at 50K and found out that all off the cars except for one had better fuel econmy, accelleration, and ride characteristics.

Pistin rings have to set, trans gears have to establish their wear patterns, bearings and everything else that relates to the car moving has to go through the same process. Once everything has been broken in, the car will get it's best fuel economy and ride.
