In general, based on commuter usage rather than off-road usage, how long would you estimate the brake pads lasting?
Loaded question I know given how much riding habits and conditions affect the equation - but I'm coming up on 20k miles and am beginning to see brake force reduction.
I can look at the pads themselves, I don't see anything unusual except that I don't see any wear indicators, just pad material.
Back story on why I'm asking.
Within my first break-in period the rear ABS module failed. BMW replaced it, but for a period there I had a good chance that the rear brakes wouldn't work. Took it in several times to have them adjust the pedal throw, bleed the brakes, finally BMW gave the green light to replace the module. Problem was resolved for while, now it appears to be coming back. Only the front brakes seem to be affected as well.
So I'm trying to come to terms with what's what - I'm going to take it in to the dealer to address the rear brakes, but they'll undoubtedly ask to replace the pads and flush the fluid. So I want to make sure that replacing them at 20k is about right (or maybe even too far gone!) and possibly my braking issues stem from worn out pads not the failed ABS module

I would think 20K is a little early myself. Especially for what the dealer will be charging. But then, since they'll be working on the system, might as well have them do the fronts too (for that balanced system feeling). It really comes down to your daily commute. Is it a lot of stop and go? Or mostly freeway with a few stops thrown in?
