Does It Matter Where I Get Gas From?
I used to buy the cheapest gas I could find, but not anymore.
I now try to stay away from the gas stations that have a sign that says "All grades offuel contain 10% ethanol or less."
I know Ethanol cuts gas mileage. Ever since most of the gas stations around here started putting ethanol in their gas, my mileage has not been too hot. It has now gone from 30mpg in the city to about 26 mpg in the city. I'm not 100% sure if it is the ethanol doing it or not, but it sure does seem like a coincidence that my mileage would drop like that.
I don't care who is selling it, I would rather buy gas that doesn't have ethanol in it. But then again, I may be getting shammed by more expensive gas that still has ethanol in it, but the station simply doesn't notify the consumers.

^^^ I know that in Nebraska, they have Silver, Regular and Premium. Only the silver has ethanol in it. In NJ, I haven't found non-ethanol gas anywhere.
Are the gas stations required by law to notify you if there is ethanol in their gas?(I don't expect anyone to truly know the answer to this, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the knowledge on this forum on numerous occasions.)
I use Super America/Speedway, Marathon, BP and Holiday gas in that order. I've never really looked at what they say on the labels... but I do prefer SA as I get 450 miles to tank with their gas
I buy from Walmart mostly cuz it's the cheapest around... Also, their gas is made from 100% USA oil, no importing from the large conglomerates... Duno if that matters to anyone...
Plus it's literally on the corner of our neighborhood, so it's dumb to really drive out o fmy way to get gas.
I've tried 9 different gas station brands around the metroplex since this thread started, and honestly I've only gotten about 10 miles difference in mileage. Not enough to believe it'll make a difference.
Tested: Walmart (Murphy), BP, Shell, Texaco (which is techincally Shell iirc), Racetrac, Conoco, Valero, 7-11, Chevron.
I have yet to try the other grocery chains to see what theirs is like (Tom Thumb, Albertsons, Krogers, etc).
I honestly thought Chevron would have yielded better results, but actually i've managed to get the lowest mileage so far from this tank I'm currently on.
I think I might re-do this test and get actual metrics; and I'm sure I could have been better about a steady driving pattern.

I used to get at least 400 miles before my low fuel light came on. Right after all of the gas stations put up the stickers that say "All fuel grades contain 10% or less Ethanol," I only get about 375 (sometimes 350) miles before my low fuel light comes on.
At first I thought there could be something wrong with my car, but I don't think that is the case.
I would buy from WalMart, but the WalMart near my house dosen't have gas pumps. The Kroger near me though always has the cheapest prices. Plus if you spend $100 at Kroger (their computers record this info from your Kroger card) you get $0.10 off every gallon. Even if you haven't spent $100, you still get $0.03 off every gallon if you scan your Kroger card at the pump. Most of the time I don't fill up at Kroger though because there are usually lines out to the street waiting for pumps. I swear you would think they are giing the gas away of something.
If I am planning to get gas (i.e. if I have been paying attention to my gas level) I usually buy my gas from a Chevron simply because the price is comparable to others, there is no "ethanol" sticker on the pumps, and the gas station is easy to get in and out of because of the location.

there have been some cases of cars running poorly with ethanol gas.
i personally get mine from a local place that doesnt add ethanol.

Some parts of the country, some times of the year, gasoline is REQUIRED to have an oxidizer in it. Alcohol is very popular since MTBE & other stuff has been outlawed. Its all about EPA rulings and how the air quality has been measured in the area.
Similarly, the laws about labeling gas pumps varies a LOT. If I saw a pump without an ethanol sticker, I wouldnt bet my engine that it was REALLY zero.

I've nevereven seen a pump that has an ethanol sticker on it! It's all gasoline where I live other than the top tier gas, it's required to have 8-10% ethanol in it which is why I don't buy it. Fuel mileage drops anywhere from 10-20% when using E10. I hope they keep it the hell out of South Texas.
My cousin works for Chevron and when I asked him if he uses Chevron he said not exclusively. I guess what they were told is to rotate between Shell and Chevron so the engine gets the benefits of both companies additives. So what he said he does is rotates between Shell and Chevron every so often, but mostly puts whatever is cheapest in.
I, personally, use Shell out of convenience and the price is always a few cents lower/higher. I tried using Raley's gas and my mpg was terrible. Valero was also convenient but they started charging extra for CC so it ended up being about same price to go to Shell or even Chevron.
