A lot of people here are already very knowledgeable. Some here come seeking answers to never-ending questions. I'm definitely not as knowledgeable as half of the people here when it comes to auto mechanics. However, this book is extremely helpful when learning.

If this is advertising or whatever, I'll gladly delete this. But I didn't think there was a difference in posting a picture of this book and someone linking you to a certain brand for auto parts. Again, if I'm wrong I'm sorry and I will delete this.

These are some specs, and I didn't write these:

This book shows you how your car works; what it needs in the way of tender loving care; and how to keep from being overcharged if you need to entrust repairs to someone else. Auto Repair For Dummies also gives you the scoop on these topics and more:

What makes your vehicle go (and how and why)
A program of "preventive medicine" to avoid trouble
Shopping for tools and knowing how to use them
Diesel engines and alternatively powered cars
How to keep your car looking its best
Dealing with on-road emergencies
Checking your tires, alignment, and steering

If anyone has any other books the think are really good or better, please share. Reading is, IMHO, the best way to learn.

 

Maybe a good basic book, but you should probably think of it as background knowledge for a Haynes repair manual for your specific car. There's too many things that can get you in trouble, like Hondas are picky about auto-tranny fluid and power-steering fluid.

For someone who wants to learn how to talk intelligently to the mechanic, that together with a Haynes book should be pretty good.

Two more words of advice...
PUBLIC LIBRARY.
You'd be surprised what they can get if you ask. Friend of mine borrowed the actual genuine HELM factory shop manual for his Acura Legend. I borrowed a nice detailed repair manual for Hasselblad camera.

 

I've heard a lot of people brag about the Haynes manuals. I'm still giving my car's manual a look through.

The Haynes manual and especially the Helm manual will make sense if you've got some mechanical experience. Like you've already taken apart your bicycle as a kid. You already know which end of a wrench, etc etc...

That's why the "dummies" book is a good first step but should be followed by something else that's SPECIFIC for your car.

 

Yeah, the Dummies book is good for someone like me who is just starting out. It starts out with very simple things that even the most inexperienced most likely knows, but the deeper in I get, the more I seem to learn. It has really good diagrams/images used as demonstration when showing you how the car actually works.
