The K-series iVTEC engines can also advance/retard cam timing (continuously variable) in addition to activating the VTEC cam.
Yeah I read that in my hanes manual a long time ago. I know I'm probably wrong, but I assumed the only way to retard or advance timing was to move the cam shaft away from the rocker arms, or move it closer to advance the timeing. How far off am I?
There are a few ways to do it: rotating the distributor (F22 and older), custom ground cams, adjustable cam gear, manually rotating a cam a sprocket forward or backward out of time with the crank, etc. The valves still open for the same lift and duration, with the exception of a custom ground cam, it's just changes the relation to TDC in degrees. Base timing on an F22B2 is 16*BTDC I believe.
Rotating the distributor won't do anything for cam timing. Besides, I'd like to see how you propose to rotate the distributor on a K-series engine. (Hint - it doesn't have a distirbutor)
Cam timing is adjusted by a funny adjustable sprocket (#7) that operates by oil pressure from a control that's ultimately driven by the ECU.

That's why I said F22 and older hehe. Even on the F23, you can't rotate the distributor to adjust base timing.
