I have a friend "Over There" since 2 weeks after 9/11...

He's not dead, but no one ever hears from him except his parents every 2-3 months...
He was part of the ranger squad, so they have him doing crazy stuff like jumping out of planes and sniping at the same time or somethin...

So I guess that's going on ... gee... 6 years?

 

Typicall tour for the airforce is 3-6 months on and 1-3 off then another 3-6 until they tally a year. Army is pretty standard at least 1 year, but you have to add 3-6 months for mobilization/de-mobilization so total time deployed is closer to 1 1/2 years. Navy, it varies depending on shore duty or ship etc. Marines have all sorts of different situations depending on what they do.

I almost joined the marines right out of high school. I had a recruiter over at my house to eat dinnerand everything. I wouldn't have the family or jobI do now if I had gone though with it, but sometimes I wish I had. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't give up my wife and baby for anything in this world. I just wish I could have served in the marinesand still been able to have the same life I do now.
