I've been thinking about getting one for a while now. Just kind of expensive for a really neat toy. Maybe i'll get one after the holidays. Somebody must have one on here? Maybe falk?

The best way for you to know what 'scan gauge 2' is ,go to this site 'scan gauge 2' on google. you will find a whole bunch of info. Is it a toy--well it is how you look at it. I want to know as much as possible when the engine is running and this is as complete a instrument that I can find. For example if your "check engine light" comes on, where do you start looking, your choices are from the gas cap to anywhere under the hood. this would tell you. If it were a nonsense light scan gauge would turn it off and give you the code number. It could not be easier to hook up-- to the OB2 under the dash. One can also use it in your other cars as it does not have to be a permanent mount in any car. Hope this helps
I'm actually looking into some ECU/ODB standards right now, and also conjuring up some hardware implementations to build custom units like this...
I'm more interested in building software that could be embedded in hardware to build units like this, but will primarily be used on say a laptop, carpc, or some mix of the two.
Eventually, I would like to find a way to replace my dash with the real time informative display.
The system would work off a "widget" system, and could be fully customizable the end user.
I have TONS of work to do to even get a prototype, and i'm trying to get some friends (mostly local for ease purposes) involved in this, as I don't want to start a project and have it just die.

As far as my jeep is concerned, the reason I"m getting the Accord is because the Jeep is to hot for my wife. Needless to say I love it. It times out at 4.2 too 60 and 13 (+/-) @ 105 for the quarter. There isn't much that stay with it from the dig until you hit around 70, then you are driving a brick against the wind resistance. It is a great sleeper and the TBSS owners never learn unless they mod up. The truck is factory limited at 168 due to the tire limits, no I have not taken it to the limits, but I'll tell you at 150 it is rock solid. Lets not talk gas mileage, the next Jeep will be the 604 liter 500HP engine. I'll be there. Thx for asking.

That's what i've found so far as far as the best unit goes...
Problem is, I find a lot of people have a hard time using it, or even getting it to work.
Also, I don't really care for the box to display any information.. I literally want to hook a computer directly into the OBD port (or at least have a minor box in place to do the translations).
I've also read about it just not being supported on their car.. With the software I'd build, it'd have profiling so that the usability could scale with the different manufacturers.. I've read that in 2008 this shouldn't be an issue as the gov't is making everyone conform to the different communication standards for ALL information; whether that happens or not is something to see.. Also, it doesn't take care of cars from 1995-2007.
My program would also be fully customizable and themable, making these ugly boxes obsolete in a New York minute.
And lastly, a little bit of competition never hurts
So you haven't quite busted my bubble, but I haven't found anything that does exactly what -I- want, and I know a few people also interested in my desires.
Obviously the software would need to log and be able to review past data, and maybe graph things out... But what I'm ---REALLY--- interested in is a custom dash for example.
Say i want my dash to have a carbon fiber background, with a fire-looking gauge for speed, and a lighthouse to represent my ligths are on... yeah it sounds cheezy, but that's the point.. the possibilities are limitless.
With the tools out there, you're extremely limited to what the box does, and the product I've displayed does more than the average, but you're still stuck to only reading raw data.
That data can be put to use and generate real time displays that are more human readable in a timely fashion.

No you haven't burst my bubble as I really want a DASH HAWK, however I run with a MAC and the Dash Hawk will not download to the MAC. and other then doing times this unit is pretty complete and half the price. I have all I can do running a desktop let alone a laptop.
