Default 2005 Honda Accord Suspension MODS - Need Suggestions

Howdy all,

I just bought a 2005 Accord Coupe LX-SE 5spd. Great car when I test drove it, and still a great car, but with only one big problem (ok there are a few more but this big one for now). I bet all Accord owners feel me when I say, the Accord rolls like a mother!!

I was going to mod the intake first, but after breaking my car in at 1000 miles, I realized that when I was driving 70-80mph on a slight curve on the freeway when my car rolllllllllllllled like crazy. Or even when I drop it into 2nd gear and floor it on a right turn and it rolls even crazier!!

Therefore, I need suggestions for a suspension kit, dampers, shocks, springs, coilovers, the whole bunch.

But before anyone suggests anything, can someone explain to me the difference between all of them???
I am a serious noob when it comes to modding cars, considering that this is my first ride.

I don't really expect to lower it much. I'm pretty rough on the dips. Maybe .5 to 1 inch is fine.

I really need some help!!

Thanks

Let me suggest two inexpensive mods that work wonders, I've done both and couldn't be more pleased.

First (see picture) order the strut/firewall brace from a 7th generation V-6, 6 speed coupe. Remove the old & install the new, it's that simple.

Second, replace the rear 14mm anti-sway bar with a 17mm or 20mm from a Acura TL.

This is an easy project and it absolutely transforms the car to one that handles very well. Body roll is gone and corners are a pleasure to take on.

I just noticed that your car is an SE. I don't know positively if the SE models have a rear anti sway bar so you'll need to check. The EX models do.

The Neuspeed short shift kit is another $50 goodie that makes the 5 speed even better. Been there, done it, love it.

Welcome,

i could not agree with you more, my 2000 accord rolled like a mother, it was the first thing i wanted to address when rebuilding my ride.

here is what i have done so far, may give you some idea or direction.

step 1. lowered the car with tein ss coliovers, set the damping force to hrd up fronat and softer in the rear.

step 2. upgraded to 18" rims and tires

step 3. installed comptech strut tower brace

step 4. just about to replace the form and rear stock sway bars with comptech sway bar kit.

step 1 and 3 alone has made the car corner like a demon, the only problem i have now

is sliding on my leather seats!!! no kidding.

to fully upgrade my suspenjsion will have cost me about, $1500.00

the comptech stuff is pricey, but quality and performance is what you get.

absoloutly upgrade your suspension my man, you will appreciate it every time your make a fast lane change or tear around the next corner.

good luck

Thanks for the suggestion guys. They're all really helpful.

Just a quick update on my research:

I talked to a retailer today and he told me to get Eibach Springs, either sportline or pro kit, and to get KYB shocks. He suggested that with this combination it will cancel the roll. Not a bad idea, just that it'll be pricy.

4 KYB shocks: roughly 400
Eibach springs: roughly 250

Any suggestions, comments?

My suggestion above can be accomplished for less than half that amount and it doesn't change the suspension geometry.

What KYB's did he/she recommend?

Any idea how much these changes would cost and how much labour would be involved (I would be taking mine to a shop)?

Less than one hour for each mod, I did them myself. If I remeber correctly the strut/firewall brace was a little over $100 and I got the 17mm anti sway bar for $35 from a member on another forum. Check with Honda/ Acura dealers in your area to see what they are asking for the parts.

My suggestion above can be accomplished for less than half that amount and it doesn't change the suspension geometry.

What this poster said is something that everyone who wants to change the suspension on a big car like the later Accords needs to think about.

Don't lower the car too much and be careful what you're doing with the toe and camber. After you do a major suspension change it's important to spend the money with somebody who specialises in four wheel competition alignments, because your total thrust could actually end up being off and you could end up with a car that seems a little flightly.

Pardon me for acting like I know it all, but I've been through this several times with several different kinds of Hondas and Acuras, and you really, truly should get a good competition alignment after a major suspension change.

Since you have a late model Accord, you might want to just look at whether the Honda HFP suspension is available. In the four cyclinder cars, it provides a decent change in handling at a very modest cost.

Certainly, adding the TL rear swaybar to an Accord will change the car's basic attitude, and provide very nice turn in. However, if you do this while also keeping the soft front springs of the Accord, you will also radically increase the chances of snap throttle lift oversteer and if you do this you should be prepared for what the car will do if you lift throttle while the car is turning and under load.
