Coilovers? Lowering Springs? Can someone please help me?

Hi everyone, I have a 97 Accord LX (CD5). It sits pretty ugly and I was wondering what set up I should go with, without spending an ungodly amount of money if I can avoid doing so. It's got 93,000 miles on it btw (crazy right?! :D) and I'm pretty sure I need shocks or something first, whenever I go over speed bumps I can hear somewhat of a creaking sound. My main question is what do I need to get my wheels flush with the car? Coilovers? Lowering springs? Struts?:confused::confused:

What is your budget? Coil overs are definitely better than struts and springs. Function form cool overs are the best bang for the buck.

cyeezy 02-07-2013 02:29 PM

I would love to have function form, and I don't really have a set budget in my head. I'm only inquiring because my birthday is coming in a few months and I just wanna see what I should go with. I still also want a smooth ride considering this is my DD. And if I were to get coilovers would I need struts/springs/etc? I'm not familiar with all the components except that I was told if I were to lower my car I'd need some CV joints because the stock ones wouldn't last after I dropped the car.

live2rice 02-07-2013 03:38 PM

Coilovers are a all in one unit. As long as you don't absolutely slam it your CV joints should be fine. A camber kit and an alignment is always a good idea though.

If I didn't go with the coilovers what other options would I have? And would it be less than coilovers? I don't plan on slamming it either, just closing the gap between the wheel and fender. I do appreciate your help man!

If you get regular lowering springs than I would get aftermarket struts to go with it. It will probably be a little less to do struts/springs than coilovers.

Coil-Overs would be your best way to go because you can adjust the mostly from 0" to 4" and in between where ever you like the look.

Okay, so if I were to go with struts and springs what are the most popular brands out there? I hear Koni struts are the most desired. What springs should I get? Like I said I still want a comfortable ride. This helps out a lot guys, thank you.

live2rice 02-10-2013 11:29 AM

Koni, kyb, bilstien are all good struts. For springs eibach is the most popular and best bang for the buck but it only lowers it about 2in which still is a little high on accords.

Okay cool, what about Tein springs?

live2rice 02-10-2013 12:55 PM

Tein is good.

This thread fits my question so I didn't want to start a new one. My 2000 Accord LX is sitting on 17 inch rims with low pro tires (don't know the tire numbers off the top of my head) all on stock suspension. I want to lower the car about 1-1.5 inch. My question is will it scrap the wheel well? i had a tiburon before my honda where the previous owner cut the struts to lower it and it beat the car to sh*t. I don't want this to happen to my honda.

JimBlake 02-21-2013 07:24 AM

Depends on exactly what wheels those are. 17" diameter by ??? wide? What offset? I'm not really gonna know the answer for you, but you certainly need to provide all the fit data of the wheels. Obviously you also need the tire size.

live2rice 02-21-2013 09:44 AM

You will be fine as long as the tires are 40 or probably even 45 tall.

1-1.5 is nothing on the accord as they have a pretty high stock ride height.

K3L 02-21-2013 10:03 AM

Okay! I will get all the dimensions today and post them! They came with the car so ill have to measure them if it doesn't say it on the tire. I just want to lower it an inch or so because that's how much gap I have between the body and my tire

JimBlake 02-21-2013 02:18 PM

If they're Honda wheels, OK.

If they're aftermarket, then you should get the offset because they might not be a real proper fit in the first place. Usually cast into the wheel on the inside of the spokes somewhere.
17 x 7
ET45
sometimes the offset "ET45" is cast into a different spoke, not right together with the size.

Okay so this is what my tires say on them. 215/45R17 87W
Of course I dont know what this means lol

This is a pic up under my front fender above the tires. Thats what im scared of my tire scrapping on.

How low do you want to go? That's the biggest

And since you don't want to spend a ton of money, I would suggest Function&Form Type 1 coilovers. Definitely the most bang for the buck. You can find them as low as $530-550 shipped online. That's cheaper than you can find a brand new set of (good) springs and shocks. For the price, they ride decently well, and because of the design, they don't get bouncier the lower you go. ANd you can go un-drivably low on these lol.

Anybody selling any lowering spring

kayweb 06-10-2013 05:32 AM

Let me google that for you

St Suspensions has a $100 rebate offer till the end of June on any of their suspension products.
Not necessarily recommending...just sayin'.

I bought a set of springs one day and then bought a rear sway bar a day or two later. Hoping to get the rebate on both.
