What moron designed the rotors behind the hub?

Default What moron designed the rotors behind the hub?

Bought a 1996 Accord for my 16 year old son last month. It had noticable vibration on braking so I figured it was a simple rotor replacement that I have done on countless fords and dodges over the years. I get the wheel off and I find that the rotor is mounted behind the wheel hub. Was there a reason for Honda to do the dumb a$$ design, or did they just want people to pay for having it done at the dealer? Anyway, after renting a 36 mm sock for the hub nut and a slide hammer, I was able to get the hubs off and back on with new rotors in about four hours (first wheel took about 3 hours and the second one took less than an hour since I figured out how to do it). Anyway, this is the first Honda I ever owned and so far I'm not very impressed.

Well, beginning in 1998 Honda switched over to a normal rotor setup just like all the others. I never really understood the motivation for the hub-over-rotor setup.

Yeah the 1998 - 02 simply require a screwdriver to get the rotor off once you have everything else off. But you cannot remove the hub without a hydraulic press. So they traded one bonehead design for another. (I had to pay a shop for an hour's worth of labor to replace a $1.50 lug I sheared a while back because the hub has to come out to drive out the lugs - I was NOT happy.)

is there a pic of what this looks like? the hub-over-rotor design? cuz im bout to buy a '95 and that sounds like a pain in the $$$

All the 94-97 have it. You can buy rotor over hub conversions, or a hub extractor to make it easier.

This shows the hub (#3) outside of the rotor (#7). The wheel bearing (#2) bolts to the steering knuckle.

My old 323GTX and my geo metro have this setup. yes it requires more work but its not a dumbass idea....at least not too me. Everything has its drawbacks deal with it.

Well, if it was such a good idea, why did Honda start putting rotors on the outside starting in 98?
