A Factoid About The Sensors...
 

This is a fact of life on the TPMS battery life.
Battery life for sensors that were installed back when this started , 2001 have the batterys being replaced. The very early versions had a battery life of 3-5 years and now the later versions have a 5-7 years life. The tire industry really doesnt know how long they'll last because not that many have been out there that long to tell...they are just starting to trace and see what is happening.

The early wheels that had them installed are starting to fail, the ones that were out there since 2001-2002.

Sensor batteries are not always active. The sensors incorporate a switch that works on centrifugal force of the spinning tire. So when your car is parked, the sensors are turned off. More to the point, if you have a 2nd set (for example snow tires) the sensors are switched off when they are stacked up in your garage.
(Applies to Schrader sensors, probably most others too)

That links to something about corrosion of the stems & hardware.

But I asked TireRack about battery life awhile ago, because I have snow tires with TPMS sensors that sit unused all spring/summer/fall. They told me that there's a little switch in the sensor that is activated by the "centrifugal force" of the wheel spinning. So they are essentially switched off during storage.
