I was wondering if I could put 6x9 speakers in my 1986. Would I be able to mount them back there?

Unfortunatly you cant. 6x9's were barley in existence back then. Go to
www.jbl.com to find what fits our rear deck. Im not sure but I think they are either 5 1/4 or 6 1/2. Go to jbl to double check.

My Friend has 6x9's in his 73 nova, so why wouldn't this fit? What if i just cut the whole bigger?

I think you have 6.5" back there. They're better than 6x9's.

I just thought the 6 x 9 would produce a better sound. Can 6.5" produce the same sound? As in quality.

A 6.5" of equal quality will produce better sound. 6x9's can play deeper (bass) because it is bigger, but the words will distort more and at lower levels than a 6.5". I've witnessed this myself. It sounds good when your riding up front, but it sounds like trash in the rear. If you notice serious sound quality competition vehicles don't have 6x9s. They run all component 5.25" or 6.5". More linear sound. Upgrade the 6.5"s and add one sub, you'll love it.

Id go with a single high quality 10". Like MB Quart or Dayton Loudspeakers
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=295-414 Dont let the price and looks fool you, Ive had a 12 and it was one of the best sounding sub woofers Ive listened to. Its dirt cheap there because they make them. If it were to be on a retail market it would go for $350 at the least.

I couldnt have said that any better. 6x9's are a poor excuse for high to low range audio. There are some vehicle that will run a tweeter, a 4" midrange and a woofer in one door. Range rovers do it, and bimmers.
Shocker

i have 6by9s and thought they were pretty good, but apparently they are not. lol
does it help if the 6by9s have a seperate mid range and tweeter? but obviously this is all incorpoated into one unit........ or could i get better sound out of a different setup?
(ps. i dont want a sub in the boot)

Yes anything can fit! It's not that 6x9's are terrible once you add the seperate tweeter, but the woofer is not an optimal design to produce the entire range of frequencies that its subject to. It could be better with a more sophisticated crossover network, but coaxials generally don't have complex crossovers they prevent lows from going to the tweeter, but don't prevent highs from going to the woofer. Woofers playing highs = mess. Since the 6x9 has a bigger woofer than a 6.5. imagine playing highs through your subwoofer at road noise level...ugh, now think about how your factory 6.5" door speakers with out a tweeter or crossover reproduce the same sound. Same concept with a 6x9 even with extra tweeters. 3-way 6x9's are a waste of dough. Get a 2-way if you must get one.

Once again I agree. THe only 6x9's I would reccommend are the MB Quarts that are just a woofer and a SEPERATE tweeter. A nice crossover is included like you would expect MB Quart to do anyway.
