there are a few reasons for the fourth band.

in your case, the band is based on temperature

i cant tell if its the right on? because not exactly your specs.
on top of that, physically looking at in my hands i cant even tell if the first line on the right is blue, green, or even gray.

if im reading this right,
gray/red/brown/red
so its 820 ohms 2% tolerance.

so can i use this?

yes. you can easily verify voltage drop across the resistor with a DMM to be sure.

ok im attempting this tomorrow guys. stay tuned as I will take pics and post it up as im doing it.

it will happen around 12 noon pacific time.

I don't want to burn anything or hurt the ecu.
im picking up a new dmm tomorrow as well. I have been putting off getting one for a while.

K.H.A., can you teach me a little more about resistors and how to figure out something about it?

the resistor I have did not blow anything or burn anything. but it didn't worked exactly how I had imagined.
the problem was that it kept the volts in a certain range. the problem was that the range was a bit too low.
13.8-14.3volts.
which resistor or how would I calculate it so that I can get the range higher.
max14.8
min 14.3
or at least near that.

what would happen if I got a higher ohm vs a lower ohm from 820 ohm 0.5 watts?

I was not able to pick up a DMM today but will get one before the next attempt.
so with out a dmm I have no idea what the resistor value I have currently.

well, I decided to go out and buy another set of resistors to see if I can raise my volt range.

resistor #2
band color:
white / brown / brown / gold
920 ohms 5% tolerance

resistor #3
color band:
violet / green / brown / red
750 ohms 2% tolerance

that's not how it works - the resistor value doesn't determine the actual voltage - it just tells the PCM to turn on the alternator field current.

actual voltage measured depends on several factors, including where the voltage is being measured, the voltage drop on that wire, and the electrical load on the car.

oh, so what will happen if I try one of these other ones?

how would I get the voltage to go higher?

sorry for the delay, been traveling for work.

changing resistor value changes the voltage the PCM sees. at some point, that hits the threshold of turning the alt on vs. off.
