I have been using the cheap $40 - $50 kits from ebay for years on many different cars and bikes.
I have been very happy with them.

I have been doing the same thing. Used several kits on many different autos with no problems. Use brands such as Xentec to no names. All work fine. Don't see a need in spending 150+ for HID lighting. If a ballast fails from the cheap kit a replacement ballast is about 12-15 dollars

Yep - I have bought at least 10 kits over the years, only 1 ballest ever failed. I replaced it for less than $15
