Default '99 front door speaker adapters

I'm contemplating replacing the factory stereo with an aftermarket (HD Radio, iPod interface, etc) and have (2) pairs of older Infinity Kappas that I'd like to re-use. They're 5-1/4" though.... I can get adapters for the rear deck from Crutchfield but they don't officially offer anything for the front doors.

Short of making adapters (out of wood), has anyone done this ? That is, put 5-1/4" speakers in place of 6-1/2"s ? If so, what did you use ?

If you made them out of wood, how thick can you go and maintain the factory grille ?

I used 3/4 mdf to make my baffels (03) and maintained factory grills. trace the outside of the stock baffle. then cut the inner circle out to make it fit the 5.25 and your set.

I'm surprised that 3/4" isn't too thick... I believe you though !

Still interested in anyone's experience with pre-made (plastic) adapters in case they're out there.

I used pre mades for the back. covered them with sound dampener and they work well. I have pictures of both the premades and the ones I made in my build log.

my build log (link in sig) and the door speaker sticky both show the door baffle process in detail. yes, 3/4" is fine and gives you more depth. the factory speaker is an odd size anyway and nothing aftermarket is equal. so 5-1/4" are fine.
