Default Installing iPod in place of CD Player in 95 LX?

I've got a '95 LX that has the OEM radio/cassette, but never had the CD Player installed. Underneath the head unit is the space where the cd player would have been.

What I would like to do (and am assuming is possible, but don't know whether it is) is hardwire a connection from my iPod to where the CD Player would have been. I'd like to use a 1/8 inch headphone jack to RCA cable. Then I'm guessing I'd need some kind of RCA to whatever-the-hookup-is-on-the-back-of-the-headunit-where-the-cd-player-would-connect adapter. Then on the head unit, I could use the AM/CD button to toggle between AM and my iPod (CD).

Anyone tried this? Am I on the right track?
