Any single DIN aftermarket HU will work, but you need to buy the metra kit that replaces the stock HU and A/C controls to install in the stock location. The cheaper way would be to replace the lower cubby storage with a much cheaper kit that will allow you to install a HU there. Or you can get a JL cleansweep, which will eliminate the permanent EQ of the stock HU and give a truly flat and clean signal, it will also allow you to add aux inputs to the stock HU, and a few other things as well.

It looks like with the Metra kit that replaces your a/c controls, you lose dual zone temperature controls. Is that accurate?

Also, what happens if with your existing stereo if you go the route of replacing the lower cubby with the Metra kit that has a single DIN for the HU and a pocket? Does it lose all functionality because you have to unhook it to hook up the new HU? Do steering wheel controls work with an aftermarket HU?

I've got a 2005 EX with satellite radio, can that get moved to a new HU, or does it need to be replaced with something else?

Thanks!

the first thing to ask yourself is why you want to replace the factory head unit. what doesn't it do that you want/need?

because of the high level of factory integration, removing the radio is complex and may require some sacrifices.

JL Clean Sweep, Audio Control DQL-8, Rockford Fosgate 3.Sixy.1 and 3.Sixty.2, Audison BitOne, are all good OEM interfaces that give you aux inputs.

If you just want to add amps and speakers, and the factory HU does enough to make you happy, go with an OEM interface. If you really want a new HU with new features, find a competent shop and pay them for the work. Gone are the days when you could buy a $10 wire harness and $20 mounting kit and call it a day. Now you're spending over a hundred bucks to integrate a HU, and you lose factory options. Retaining factory options like steering wheel controls, requires additional adapters, cost, and labor.

anything is possible if you have the skill and funds.

some are locating an aftermarket head unit in the storage pocket beneath the factory radio. this saves money on integration, and retains a stealth, factory appearance.

This is a great resource for factory integration, steering wheel controls, etc:

The main thing I want is a direct line in for my iPod/iPhone. I'd settle for a 3.5mm aux line in.

The OE stereo I've got has XM satellite, 6 dish in-dash CD player, AM, and FM.

There's no aux button, though conceivably, the mode button would allow you to cycle through to another source if there was wiring in the back that would accept it.

Any thoughts?
